Getting fired isn’t something most people celebrate, but for me, it marked the start of a whole new chapter. I shared this story on a recent podcast, and looking back, it’s incredible how everything lined up.
Making the Most of the Weekend
That Friday when I got fired, I felt a strange sense of relief. It wasn’t that I didn’t enjoy my job—I did—but something inside me knew it was time for a change. That same day, I reached out to an attorney friend and told him, “I want to do something in real estate in the city of Chicago.”
He listened and said, “If that’s what you want, you better look into CIC (Community Investment Corporation).” I asked some questions and then didn’t waste another second.
I spent the weekend looking online and lo and behold, I found it: a real estate course at Malcolm X College. There was a holiday on Monday, and the class started on Tuesday. I thought to myself, “I’m going. I’m going!”
That class was the beginning of everything. It’s where I met my mentor and good friend Taft West.
When All the Pieces Line Up
What’s wild is how close I came to missing it. If I’d been fired a week earlier or a week later, the class might not have been there when I needed it. It felt like a higher power was guiding me, lining up all the little pieces at just the right time.
That experience taught me an important lesson about timing and resilience. What felt like a loss at first turned into one of the best opportunities of my life. Sometimes, when one door closes, another really does open—you just have to be ready to walk through it.
