Southside Chicago property management companies handle all sorts of tenant calls and maintenance issues. It’s part of the job. After all, property managers are here to solve problems, big and small. But sometimes, we get calls that leave us scratching our heads. This week was no exception.

Not Your Average Plumbing Issue

We manage a number of multi-unit buildings where all the units are the same with two bedrooms and one bath. It’s a great setup for our tenants, but even in the most ordinary spaces, things can get a little… unexpected.

This time, we received a tenant call about their toilet not working. No big deal, right? We sent our maintenance crew out to take a look, expecting the usual fix.

What they found was definitely not your average plumbing issue.

A Fight Goes From Tank to Toilet

Imagine our maintenance team’s surprise when they discovered a large koi fish lodged in the toilet. People flush belly-up goldfish all the time, but this guy was no goldfish.

As the maintenance team investigated further, the bizarre story behind it began to unfold. It turned out, the tenant had gotten into a spirited debate with her boyfriend.

In the heat of the moment, the boyfriend took drastic action to win the battle. He flushed her pet fish down the toilet. Needless to say, this situation required more than just plumbing expertise.

One Last Ride

The good news? We quickly fixed the toilet, and the tenant could use her only bathroom again. As for the fish, the poor little guy had a wild ride, but unfortunately, he did not make it. We hear he’s swimming in the big pond in the sky with his buddies, though.
